Netreo uses device groups to organize your managed devices into administratively manageable sets based on a shared property of those devices. This allows you to view, select or edit an entire set of devices as a group.
There are three different device group types available:
- Category - based on the general type and functionality of a device.
- Site - based on the location (actual or theoretical) of a device.
- Strategic group - based on arbitrary, user-determined criteria. (Business workflows are a function of strategic groups.)
Device groups play a major role in how Netreo provides its information, as dashboard widgets usually display devices by device group first, and allow you to drill down to individual managed devices from there. Additionally, most types of reports use device groups when being configured to narrow down the device selection options for the report. When a device group is displayed somewhere in Netreo, the name of the group is typically a link item that opens the device group dashboard for that group when selected.
Each device group type is also a level in the Netreo device template hierarchy at which device templates may be applied to managed devices.
