Article summary

At the core of Netreo’s operation is a series of monitoring checks that are performed against the devices and applications on the networks it monitors.

Service Checks

A service check queries a service or application on its host device for a response. The response code determines the status of the check. It is the most versatile check type, with the broadest range of options. (Host availability is monitored using a service check.) Failure of a service check triggers host checking to aid in root cause analysis of the failure.

Service check status can be viewed by using the Tactical Overview dashboard widget.

See Service Checks for a more complete explanation of service checks.

Host Availability Check

A host availability check is actually just a service check that queries a managed device for its availability on the network. The Service Check article fully explains this check and how it works.

Threshold Checks

Netreo automatically collects and stores a wide range of statistical data from your devices for monitoring and reporting purposes. By using a threshold check, the values of these statistics can be actively monitored as they are collected for the following behaviors.

  • Static Thresholds
Monitors an individual instance of a statistic for unacceptably high and/or low values by comparing the collected values to static threshold values.
  • Dynamic Thresholds (Anomaly)
Monitors an individual instance of a statistic for unusual changes in its regular behavior by comparing the collected values to eight previous values from the same relative timestamp.

The status of threshold checks can be viewed by using the Tactical Overview dashboard widget.

See Threshold Checks for a more complete explanation of threshold checks.

Web Application Response Time (WebART) Checks

WebART checks monitor availability and response-time performance of web-based applications. They can step through an application following a typical user path, checking the response time of each step along the way. Applications also may be queried using service engines to measure response performance from a location other than that of the Netreo server.

WebART checks are actually a super-check composed of service check and threshold check sub-components.

The status of WebART checks can be viewed by using the Web Application dashboard widget.

See WebART Checks for a more complete explanation of WebART checks.

Email Application Response Time (EmailART) Check

The email check monitors the availability and response-time performance of your organization's email application. It also doubles as an internet connectivity check to confirm your network's ability to communicate with the outside world.

The EmailART check is actually a super-check, composed of service check and threshold check sub-components.

The status of the email application check can be viewed by using the Email dashboard widget.

See EmailART Check for a more complete explanation of the EmailART check.

Configuration Check

The configuration check is a global check performed nightly by the config manager on all eligible managed devices. It monitors hosts for changes to their internal device configuration.

The status of device configurations can be viewed by using the Config Manager dashboard widget.

See Config Manager for a more complete explanation of the configuration check.
