User Types

There are two user types in Netreo:

  • Web Users
Web users access Netreo through the web browser-based user interface.
  • Cloud Users
Cloud users access Netreo through the mobile application. (A mobile user's login must be associated with a valid web user account.)

See User Management for information about adding and editing Netreo user accounts.

Web User Attributes

Access Level

Web users can be assigned one of four access levels. The different levels restrict access to tools in Netreo appropriate to each level. An access level must be assigned when a user is created. However, the access level can easily be changed at any time thereafter.

The four access levels (from lowest to highest) are:

  • USER
This is a "read-only" level. A user at this level can only view tools and reports for managed devices within their user partition group (if one is assigned). Users can acknowledge alarms for host availability, service, and threshold checks. This access level is intended for the typical Netreo user. They do not have access to device configuration tools or to the administration or configuration of individual devices or alerts within Netreo.
  • POWER USER
A user with this access level can view all normal user reports and tools, as well as some higher permission-level reports and tools. This includes security tools (such as port scanners) and the ability to view and compare device configurations. Power Users can acknowledge alarms for host availability, service and threshold checks. This access level is intended for more advanced normal users who are not using Netreo in an administrative capacity. Power users can only see tools and reports for devices within their user partition group (if one is assigned). They do not have access to the administration or configuration of individual devices or alerts within Netreo.
  • ADMIN
A user with this access level can view any user-level tools, as well as edit any of the monitoring, polling, and threshold configurations for any managed devices within their user partition group (if one is assigned). Admins can also push device configurations to managed devices in their user partition. Admins cannot make any changes to the Netreo system or that would affect users globally. This access level is intended for users who oversee other lower-level Netreo users. Admins cannot view or edit anything for devices that are not within their specific user partition group.
  • SUPERADMIN
This is a "root" user who can change anything in Netreo. This access level is intended for users who will be administrating Netreo itself. A SuperAdmin can view and edit anything configured in the appliance; as well as add managed devices, define user partitions and manage other users. SuperAdmins cannot be restricted to a user partition. It is recommended to limit the number of users to whom you assign this access level.

User Partitions

A user partition is used to restrict the managed devices a user can see and interact with within Netreo.

Within an enterprise environment, partitions are useful for filtering out devices from a user's view that are outside the realm of their responsibility.

Within a service provider environment, partitions allow a service provider to produce comprehensive reports for customers while also preventing them from seeing devices outside of their service environment.

Users With No Partition
A user with no partition assigned can see all managed devices in Netreo.

Users with a partition assigned to them may only view and interact with the devices assigned to that partition. Users with no partition assigned to them have an unrestricted view of every managed device in Netreo.

Users may have a partition assigned to them at any time and may also easily be moved between partitions by an administrator if necessary.

User Dashboards

Web users can have a custom dashboard assigned to them that acts as their "home" dashboard (instead of the default Consolidated Dashboard).

Assigning a custom dashboard to a user is useful when utilizing role-specific custom dashboards. A user with a custom dashboard assigned to them is taken straight to their custom dashboard after logging in without being required to navigate to it from the Consolidated Dashboard, as is the norm. The home icon in the main menu bar then returns the user to their custom dashboard when clicked instead of taking them to the Consolidated Dashboard.

User Dashboard Cannot be Forced
The user dashboard specified in a web user's configuration may be overridden by the default dashboard specified in their User Preferences page, and vice versa.

Users with a custom dashboard assigned to them can still view the Consolidated Dashboard by going to the main menu and selecting Quick Views > Consolidated Dashboard.

Preconfigured Web User Accounts

Netreo ships with two preconfigured web user accounts, "administrator" and "basic user." These are not intended for general use and should not be used to log in to Netreo under normal circumstances.

  • administrator
The administrator web user is the default administrative account used when first setting up Netreo. (Note that despite its name, the administrator user is of access level SuperAdmin.) This user is only intended for the initial administration of Netreo. We recommend new SuperAdmin users be immediately created for the individual(s) who will be administrating Netreo itself. This provides accountability in the form of logged activity for individually identifiable users. (It is highly recommended that you do not delete the "administrator" user.)
  • basicuser
The basicuser web user is a legacy account. It was used to set permissions for pass-through authentication from the old OmniCenter Overview product to an on-premises virtual appliance. It is also occasionally utilized during the creation of some reports. (It is recommended that you do not delete the "basicuser" user.)

It is highly recommended that all Netreo users be assigned personal accounts from which to work and that the above preconfigured users not be used for day-to-day activities. This allows Netreo’s audit log to provide accurate accounting details on user actions.

Cloud User Attributes

Netreo Cloud ID
The name of the web user (see above) that this cloud user is associated with.

Netreo User
The email address that was provided by the web user when first logging in with the Netreo mobile application.

UUID
The unique identifier within Netreo that is used to manage this cloud user internally. Assigned automatically by Netreo.

Netreo Functionality Restricted By User Type

The following tables identify what operations are available to each user access level by their location in the main menu.

Quick Views Menu

Any dashboard visible in the Quick Views menu is accessible by that user access level.

Dashboards restricted by an administrator to higher user access levels are not displayed to users not of the appropriate level.
